Mark As Spam

so back in 2004, after dean dropped out, i signed up as a volunteer for the kerry campaign. in the process, naturally, i provided them with my email.

they have now, four years later, given that email to the obama campaign.

i guess this is not technically wrong, but it just feels kind of shitty. i do not want more of your goddamn video, obama, i already can't hardly read your platform on your website, you have so much freaking embedded video on it, and now you're jamming more of it into my inbox. without asking.

Actually, they didn't give your email away. The email you got allows you to subscribe to Obama's campaign list if you want to... I don't think it means you're on it already.

I got the same email, by the way.

hm. it does look like it came from only kerry, if i hover over the sender's name. it took so long to load that i didn't read all of it.

i wrote a cranky letter to kerry about it, anyway.

You loathe embedded video? Golly. As something that users immediately know how to use, that delivers content seamlessly, and that's easy to implement on sites, I must admit that I love embedded video with the white-hot love of a thousand suns. A thousand very loving suns. That also love embedded video.

Why not just uninstall Flash?

uninstalling flash wouldn't be a good option, i don't think. i mean, i like to be able to watch video when i want to watch video, or to play games when i want to play games, but embedded makes my life suck. it's like the embedded MIDI file of web 2.0. webpages load slower, or they break. i do not need to see the first screen of the video with a little 'click me!' arrow on it. a link with a description is good enough for me. half the time people don't even bother to label the videos, so if you want to know what they are, you're stuck watching them.

frequent embedded video is enough to make me stop visiting a site for good. i've been a regular pandagon reader for years, but when they get into one of their YouTube moods, i stop going there til new posts push down all the video crap.

i really think obama has the worst website of all the democratic candidates. there's a different freaking video on every page! i don't want to watch the video! i want to read the webpage! grr!

"If I want my computer to make noise while I read your webpage, I'll wet my finger and drag it across my [CRT] screen."

Somebody complaining about autoplaying MIDI and embedded RealAudio files ca. 1996. I have always loved that line.

With Firefox, I used to use the FlashBlock extension and now use NoScript to block all manner of embedded stuff. Both give me the option to click and load things on a case-by-case basis. I haven't looked hard for equivalents for other browsers.
