If I'm contagious with something nasty, in your position I'd stay home.
In my own position, where I could easily expect to miss up to 2 weeks a semester, I would only stay home if my temperature was over 100, or if I hadn't fallen asleep until after 2 AM for unpreventable reasons and it was a morning class.
Contagiousness, or an inability to perform my job duties adequately.
I catch 2/3rds or more of my illnesses from contagious people who would have stayed home if they knew how their work day was going to go. Please stay home if you are contagious.
I tend to soldier on unless it is really nasty and contagious or I can't physically do it. I tend to go ahead and keep working with things like colds unless I am just too sick to move much.
If I'm sick enough that I wouldn't be able to do my work properly, or that work would make it harder to heal properly, I'll stay home. Otherwise, it's a matter of balancing contagiousness, how bad I'd be feeling at work, cost of time off, and how much they need me.
If your workplace, like mine, doesn't distinguish between sick days and vacation days, going in whenever possible will help expose the market to the costs of this policy.
